Hofstra Ends ODU Win Streak With Walk-Off Homer In Ninth

HEMPSTEAD, NY - Shortstop Josh Stern led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a solo homerun to left center to give the Pride of Hofstra (13-18/5-8) an 8-7 CAA victory over 15th /18th ranked Old Dominion (29-4/12-1) Friday afternoon. The win ended ODU's 18-game win streak which equaled the longest single season streak in the Nation(Mississippi State) and ODU's Division I mark set in 1985.

ODU took a 3-0 lead in the first as Bryan Cipolla and Patrick Nichols singled inruns. Hofstra came right back in the second with a three-spot as Andy Campana, ChrisMentrasti and Ricky Caputo each knocked in runs.

In the fifth, ODU scored three as Mike Zahm slammed a two-run homer withChris Keenan aboard. Justin Gregula's fielders' choice then plated Dana Arrowood.Hofstra came back in the sixth as Chris Mentrasti doubled in Nick Panzarella and RickyCaputo hit his tenth homer of the year with Mentrasti aboard.

ODU regained the lead in the seventh when Keith Hahn singled in Bryan Cipolla who led the inning off with a double. Hofstra tied the game in the eighth on Andy Campana's leadoff homer against ODU's Dana Arrowod, his first of the year. In thebottom of the ninth Stern ends the game with a lead-off homer against the CAA's save leader who had six coming into the series.

Hofstra outhit ODU, 13-7. Cipolla led the Monarchs with three hits, whileAndy Campana and Ricky Caputo each had three hits for the Pride. The two teamsplay game two of the series Saturday at 2 p.m.
