PHILADELPHIA, PA - The semi-finals of the 2006 CAA Wrestling Championships are completed and 20 wrestlers have earned NCAA Championship berths. Hofstra has eight wrestlers who have clinched bids with Old Dominion and Rider each having three wrestlers in the national tournament. Drexel and Sacred Heart have two berths each. Drexel earned four third-place finishes.
In a battle of freshmen 125-pounders, it was Old Dominion's Bryan LaShomb defeating Steve Mytych, 6-3. In the other semi-final Hofstra's Dame Tomasette defeated Rider's Ryan Smith, 12-5, to punch his ticket to the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City.
At 133 pounds, Old Dominion's Ryan Williams defeated Drexel's Zach Makovsky, 14-3. In the other semi-final Rider's Zack Cunliffe defeated Kyle McCarthy of Sacred Heart.
At 141 pounds, 14th-ranked Charles Griffin of Hofstra defeated Mike Tutunjian of Wagner. At 149 pounds, fifth-ranked Jon Masa advanced for Hofstra as well.
The first six-seed to advance to Oklahoma City was Drexel's Chris Renninger. The junior pinned second-seeded Mike Kessler of Rider in front of a partisan crowd to earn his second win by fall of the Championships. Renninger's fall may have inspired teammate Ryan Hluschak. The sophomore 157-pounder took the mat after Renninger and earned his second fall of the Championships when he pinned Sherwood Fendryk of Sacred Heart.
The final two rounds of consolations will begin at 2 p.m. The championship matches are slated to begin at 6 p.m. Scroll down for third and second round consolation results that took place earlier in the day.
