ODU Defeats Maryland For 15th Straight

NORFOLK, VA.--Old Dominion University (26-3), ranked 27th byCOLLEGIATE BASEBALL won its 15th straight game with a 4-1 non conference victory over the University of Maryland (11-16) Wednesday Night.

Freshman Ross Fetterly(Norfolk, Va.) picked up the win in his first collegiate start. He Fanned three, walked one and scattered six hits. Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, VA.) picked up his fourth save of the year in relief.

Maryland got on the board first with successive singles by Matt Maropis, Nick Jowers and Gerry Spessard. Spessard's single plated Maropes, then Fetterly settled downwith the help of a doubleplay to get out of the inning. The Terps threatened in the seventh and eighth innings, but Monarch relievers Needham Jones (Portsmouth, VA.), Hunter Hall (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Dana Arrowood pitched out of the jams.

In the bottom of the first Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.) doubled home Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, VA), followed by a run scoring single by Dana Arrowood which plated Cipolla to give the Monarchs a 2-1 lead. In the third, Tyler Belcher(Bristol, Va.) singled home Dana Arrowood. In the seventh, thanks to two Maryland errors, Mike Zahm (Omaha, NE) scored the fourth run.

Cipolla, and Dana Arrowood each had two hits on the night for ODU, whileGerry Spessard led Maryland with three hits. ODU hosts #25 JMU in a three-gameCAA series beginning Friday night at 7 p.m. Maryland hosts Georgia Tech in a three-game ACC series also beginning Friday at 7 pm.
