NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion (23-3/7-0) made the best of only two hits along with the strong pitching of senior righthander Kevin Gunter (Richland, NJ.) to defeat William and Mary (8-14/3-7), 4-1 in a CAA contest Friday night. ODU ranked 30th by COLLEGIATE BASEBALL.
Senior thirdbaseman Justin Gregula (Washington, PA.) emptied the bases with a triple in ODU's four-run fourth. He also doubled in the eighth. Gregula's triple knocked in Patrick Nichols (Chesapeake, Va.), Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, VA.)and Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.). Nichols started the scoring by walking with the bases loaded to force in Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, VA.).
William and Mary pitchers walked eight batters on the evening while ODU's Kevin Gunter fanned nine, walked two while allowing only one run. Dana Arrowood finished up In the ninth. The Tribe's lone run came in the eighth as Mike Sheridan's sacrifice fly to right plated Jeff Lunardi. W&M left nine on base, while ODU left seven.
The two teams play the second game of the series on Saturday at 5 p.m.
