NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion is the #10 seed in the Cleveland Region and will face #7 seed George Washington on its home court in Norfolk, Va., on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. The game will broadcast live on ESPN.
The winning team will advance to face the winner of the Tennessee/Army game in the second round on Tuesday, March 21. Tennessee (28-4) is the Cleveland Region's #2 seed and Army is seeded #15 with 20-10 record. The Lady Vols and the Black Knights will tip at Noon on Sunday and the game will be aired on ESPN2.
ODU (22-8) edged the James Madison Dukes 58-54 Saturday afternoon in a thrilling title game to capture their record 15th-consecutive Colonial Athletic Association championship. ODU has yet to lose a tournament game since joining the CAA back in 1991-92. George Washington (22-8), which won the Atlantic-10 regular season title, received an at-large bid from the NCAA after falling to third-seeded Temple, 59-54, on March 6.
The Lady Monarchs will be making their 15th straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 23rd overall with only Tennessee and Louisiana Tech, both making the 2006 tournament, making more appearances.
Also squaring off in first round action will be #1 seeded Duke (26-3) and #16 seeded Southern (20-10) at 7 p.m. on ESPN2 with #8 seeded Southern California (18-11) versus #9 seeded South Florida (18-11) followed approximately 30 minutes later also on ESPN2. Those teams are vying for a spot to the "Sweet 16" in the Bridgeport Regional.
Tickets for the NCAA Tournament are currently available. Tournament books, which include all three sessions, are $45 for adults for all games ($30 for youth 17 and under).
