NORFOLK, VA--Righthander Jason Godin (Stafford, VA.) pitched a completegame five hit shutout, with no walks and 11 strikeouts as Old Dominion (16-3/ 2-0) defeated George Mason (7-9/2-3), 2-0. It was the second straight shutout for the Monarch pitching staff. The last time ODU pitchers threw back-to-back shutouts was in 1995 when ODU shutout Towson and Liberty.
ODU's first run came in the second inning when Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.) scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Justin Gregula (Washington, PA.). The Monarchsgot an insurance run in the eighth as Jimmy Miles (Orlando, FL.) scored on Mike Zahm's (Omaha, NE.) two-out double. Godin is now 4-0 on the year and has 39 strikeouts in 36 innings pitched.
George Mason's Brent Hitz pitched 7.2 innings, walking one and fanning four.In the seventh inning Scott Krieger led off with a doubled down the rightfield line, buthe was later thrown out in a run down, trying to steal third. The 16-3 start is the best since 1999. Dana Arrowood led ODU with two hits and increased his batting average to .462 while Jimmy Miles is second at .429.
