NORFOLK, VA--Junior firstbaseman Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.) had four hits and four RBI while pitchers Hunter Hall (Virginia Beach, Va.), Ross Fetterly (Norfolk, VA.) and David Wagner (Johnstown, PA.) combined for a seven-hit shutout to lead Old Dominion University (8-1) to an 11-0 victory over Longwood (5-6) Wednesday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. ODU pounded out 17 hits and registered its first shutout since the 2004 season.
Cipolla added to his team leading RBI total to 15 as he singled home Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, VA.) ,and Mike Zahm (Omaha, NE.) in the sixth, Jimmy Miles(Orlando, FL.) and Keenan in the eighth. Freshman Anthony Shawler (Chesapeake, VA.)along with senior Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, VA.) each had three hits, while Keenan scored three times, and knocked in two runs. It was Shawler's first collegiate homerun.
Hunter Hall pitched six scoreless innings with no walks and four strikeouts forHis second win of the year. His earned run average is now at 1.32. Freshman RossFetterly along with sophomore David Wagner pitched the final three innings.
ODU's defense committed no errors and turned three double plays.The last ODU shutout was April 24 of 2004 against William and Mary, by DonnieSmith (now in the St. Louis Cardinal organization).
The Monarchs return to action Friday at 3 p.m. when they host a three-game series against Rutgers.
