RICHMOND, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team fell to 4-2 on the season as they were defeated 7-0 by #33 Virginia Commonwealth in their CAA opener at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. The loss snapped a two-match Lady Monarch win streak while the Rams improved to 9-0.
The Lady Monarchs did make a run at the doubles point, however, taking third position with Barbara Costa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Barbara Kerner (Herxheim, Germany) scoring a 9-8 (3) win over the VCU duo of Viktoria Konstantinova and Camille Ripert.
Old Dominion also threatened at first doubles, but the Rams' 17th-ranked pair of Marianna Yuferova and Olga Borisova won a hard-fought, 9-8 (1) decision over Fernanda Luiz (Nova Lima, Brazil) and Charleen Haarhoff (Durban, South Africa) to secure the 1-0 lead.
The Lady Monarchs return to action on Friday, February 17th in a doubleheader. Old Dominion hosts Howard at 1:00 p.m. and CAA rival George Mason at 8:00 p.m. at Center Court Racket Club in Newport News.
