Women's Tennis Collects Second Straight Win With 7-0 Victory Over George Washington

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team claimed victory in its second straight match as they defeated George Washington, 7-0, on the courts at Center Court Racket Club on Wednesday afternoon.

Freshman Charleen Haarhoff (Durban, South Africa) saw her first action at the top spot in singles and played her way to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over the Colonials Anastasia Skarvonskaia. Sophomore Barbara Costa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) picked up a straight set, 6-3, 6-2, win at No. 2 singles over Kendall Swenson. At the No. 3 spot, sophomore Fernanda Luiz (Nova Lima, Brazil) earned a 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 win against Tracy Stecko, while junior Larissa Santos (Florianopolis, Brazil) picked up a 6-2, 6-4 victory over George Washington's Madhuri Jah. Junior Barbara Kerner (Herxheim, Germany) took home a 6-1, 6-3 decision at No. 5 singles and sophomore Linda Garder (Tallinn, Estonia) defeated Leah Woodard, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.

In doubles, the Lady Monarchs captured all three matches including winning by a score of 8-1 at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. At No. 1 doubles, Haarhoff and Luiz teamed to defeat Skarvonskaia and Woodarad whileCosta and Kerner joined forces for a victory over Jha and Frisch. At No. 2 doubles, senior Kerstin Endlich (Neustadt, Germany) and Garder prevailed with an 8-4 win over the Colonial tandem of Steckso and Swenson.

The Lady Monarchs return to action in thier first CAA match of the season on February 12th against #51 Virginia Commonwealth.
