NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team opened up the spring season on Friday recording a 6-1 victory over Hampton.
The Lady Monarchs picked up wins at five of the six singles positions and took two of three at doubles.
Kerstin Endlich made her first appearance 2006 at No. 1 singles earning a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Besedova. Also making her first appearance was Charleen Haarhoff, who joins the squad this spring. Playing at No. 3 singles, Haarhoff picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over the Pirates' Tapissinots.
Also earning victories were Fernanda Luiz, Larissa Santos, and Linda Garder. Luiz tookhome a 6-2, 6-1 victorya at No. 4 singles against Svreeta Thompson. Santos needed three sets to get past Jana Torrcankova at No. 5 singles with a 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 win. Garder, at No. 6 singles, played her way to an 6-3, 6-3 win over Hampton's Vivione Costa.
In doubles, the Lady Monarchs won matches at No. 2 and No. 3 both by a score of 8-0. Haarhoff and Luiz teamed to defeated Torrcankova and Young at No. 2 doubles, while Kerner and Costa joined forces to for the victory over Besedova and Thompson.
The Lady Monarchs will also host Norfolk State at Center Court Racket Club on Friday night. Match begins at 8:00 p.m. The Lady Monarchs' next match will be at #72 Virginia on Sunday and a neutral court match with Princeton on Monday.
