WILMINGTON, NC--. Junior forward Edson Elcock (Brooklyn, NY) tallied the lone goal tonight as the 6th ranked Old Dominion University Soccer Monarchs edged the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks 1-0 in their CAA opener. With the win, ODU has recorded three consecutive shutouts and ran their record to 6-1-1 (1-0) on the year. UNC-Wilmington lost their third consecutive contest and fell to 5-4 (0-1) on the season.
Elcock scored his unassisted goal in the 40th minute of play after blasting a shot 18 yards out and from the right past the Seahawks keeper and to the back of the net. It was his second goal of the season. Senior goalkeeper John Connelly (Rockville, MD) recorded his fifth shutout of the season, stopping four shots on the evening. ODU held an 11-10 advantage in shots, and an 11-5 advantage in corner kicks in what was a tightly contested match all night.
The Monarchs return to action Sunday afternoon as they take on new CAA addition Georgia State in their conference home opener. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Stadium.
