The #22 ranked Old Dominion Soccer Monarchs defeated the N.C. State Wolfpack 2-1 in the season opener for both teams. Trevor Banks (Madison, WI), recently named by College Soccer News as one of the "100 Freshman to Keep an Eye On", scored both Monarch goals in his collegiate debut. John Connelly (Rockville, MD) collected three saves on the evening for ODU.

ODU kicked off the scoring in the 35th minute of play when Banks headed in a cross sent by Edson Elcock (Brooklyn, NY). The Wolfpack answered in the 52nd minute when Aaron King notched an unassisted score to the lower left of the goal ODU would respond in quick fashion 18 seconds later when Banks placed a pass from Jared Kent (Marietta, GA) into the back of the net at 52:10 to give the Monarchs the deciding goal.

For the match, the Monarchs out shot N.C. State 12-8. ODU extended their home regular season winning streak to 24 games, and have not lost a home regular season match since 2002. Preseason 1st team All-American Trevor McEachron (Woodbridge, VA) made his comeback from a knee injury, and played all 90 minutes of this contest.

The annual Stihl Soccer Classic kicks off on Friday September 9th at the ODU Soccer Stadium. The Monarchs will see action on Friday at 7:00 p.m. against Rhode Island. Their Sunday match will take place on 2:30 against Clemson.
