The #22 ranked Old Dominion Soccer Monarchs played the Virginia Tech Hokies to a 1-1 tie Saturday night at the ODU Soccer Stadium in the preseason exhibition debut for both teams. Ross Mackenzie (Richmond, VA/Clover Hill) scored the lone goal for the Monarchs. John Connelly (Rockville, MD/Rockville) finished the night with 5 saves.
The Monarchs were awarded a penalty kick after Brian Cvilikas (Highland Ranch, CO/Highland Ranch) was fouled. Ross Mackenzie (Richmond, VA/Clover Hill) connected to the lower right on the ensuing penalty kick in the 31st minute to give ODU a 1-0 advantage. Virginia Tech responded in the 34th minute when Dustin Dyer serviced a cross to Magnus Einarsson who knocked it in to tie the score 1-1. Overtime was not played in this exhibition match.
The Monarchs took 11 shots to Virginia Tech's 9, with eight of those shots being on goal. Along with his goal, Mackenzie took three shots on target for the evening. Trevor McEachron (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) made his return for the Monarchs after being out of action since 2003, and played the entire match as a central defender.
The Monarchs face American on the road next Saturday in their final exhibition tune-up before the season opener at home against N.C. State Thursday September 1st at 7:00 P.M.
