NORFOLK, Va. --Freshman Abby Waner scored 17 points to lead No. 1/2 Duke to a 93-56 defeat of Old Dominion on Sunday at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. Duke improved to 2-0 on the year, while the Lady Monarchs lost their season opening contest. For ODU, sophomore guard T.J. Jordan (Portsmouth, VA) poured in 17 points to lead the team.
The Blue Devils got off to a torrid start in the first half, opening up a 26-4 advantage in the first 8:53 minutes of the game. ODU would make a run of their own, using nine consecutive points by Jordan to cut the Duke lead to 39-20. Old Dominion would get no closer than 17 points the rest of the game.
Freshman Jazzmin Walters (Norfolk, VA) and junior forward Paula Muxuri (Luanda, Angola) were bright spots for the Lady Monarchs. Walters dished out eight assists in her career debut, and Muxuri scored 12 points on 5-8 shooting. Junior forward Tish Lyons (Newport News, VA) hauled down 5 offensive rebounds in the losing effort. Jordan would bury two treys, the only three point shots made by the Lady Monarchs on the afternoon.
Waner shot 7-9, and 2-4 from three point lead to earn her 17 points on the day. Wanisha Smith dished out a game-high 11 assists, and Monique Currie totaled 15 points and nine boards, almost notching a double-double.
The Lady Monarchs return to action this Tuesday as they travel to Virginia Tech to take on the Hokies. ODU's next home game takes place Tuesday November 29th as they host Penn State at 7:00 p.m.
