Lady Monarchs Defeat Athletes In Action, 92-79, In Exhibition Action

NORFOLK, Va. -- In their second exhibition showing of the 2005-06 preseason, the Lady Monarchs earned a 92-79 victory over Athletes in Action on Monday evening at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

Sophomore Jen Nuzzo (Newport News, Va.) and T.J. Jordan (Portsmouth, Va.) paced the Lady Monarch offense with 14 points apiece. Nuzzo, who started at the point, shot 4-of-6 from the field and was Old Dominion's top free throw shooter connecting for 5-of-6. Jordan meanwhile went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc in the first half and finished the night 5-of-9 from the floor.

Athletes in Action was led by Heather Cusick, a 2003 graduate of Miami University. The 5-8 guard poured in a game-high 32 points and also collected a game-high four assists.

Old Dominion led throughout the game starting off with a 30-8 run and holding a 22-point edge by the 13:02 mark of the first half. The Lady Monarchs pushed their lead to 25, 38-13, as 9:19 remained until intermission.

In the second half, the Lady Monarchs led by as many as 22 on several occasions. Athletes in Action was only able to cut their deficit to 11 in the closing minutes of the game.

Two other Lady Monarchs finished the night in double figures. Junior Tish Lyons (Newport News, Va.) saw significant minutes after her injury during the Blue-White scrimmage. She came off the bench for 12 points shooting 5-of-10 from the floor, 2-of-3 from the line, and registered a team-high three assists. Senior Lawona Davis (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) registered 10 points and a game-high six boards. The lone ODU senior also recorded a game-high four steals.

Old Dominion shot a blistering 58.5 percent from the floor as the Lady Monarchs went 38-of-65 from the field. Sophomore Tiffany Green (Chesapeake, Va.), juniors Paula Muxiri (Luanda, Angola) and Angela Brown (Albany, Ky.) and newcomer Jazzmin Walters (Norfolk, Va.) only had one miss from the floor on the night's stat sheet.

On the boards, the Lady Monarchs held a 36-32 edge.

The Lady Monarchs return to action in their final exhibition showing of the season. Old Dominion will take on Team Concept, a team which features former Lady Monarchs Tiffany Thompson, Sharon Francis, and Okeisha Howard. Game time has been changed to 4:00 p.m. from its original 2:00 p.m tip.
