FAIRFAX, VA--. Junior Ross Mackenzie (Midlothian, VA) scored the lone goal of the match to give the 8th ranked Old Dominion Soccer Monarchs a 1-0 win at conference rival George Mason. The win improves ODU's record to 12-2-2 (7-1-1) on the season while Mason dropped to 6-6-4 (2-3-4). Senior goalkeeper John Connelly (Rockville, MD) stopped 5 shots on net to record his ninth shutout in the past 11 contests.
Mackenzie netted his score in the 52nd minute by finishing a feed from Gregg Mottinger (Carrollton, TX) to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead that they would not relinquish. The goal was set up after a shot taken by Truls Kjendlie (Hamar Norway) deflected off the goalpost and to Mottinger. With the victory, the Monarchs retain their spot atop the CAA regular season standings with two matches to go.
ODU outshot the Patriots 21-10 on the evening, and also held a decided 12-1 advantage in corner kicks. George Mason goalkeeper Eric Barnes helped his team's cause by stopping 12 Monarch shots on goal in the contest.
The Monarchs return to action Sunday afternoon at 1:00 P.M. for a conference match at Towson.
