CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Sophomore Eidy Igarashi (São José do Rio Preto, Brazil) advanced to the Round of 64 in singles and teamed with junior Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) to reach the Round of 16 in doubles the first day of main draw action at the 2005 ITA Mideast Regional held on the campus of North Carolina.

Igarashi wasted no time in moving to the Round of 64 as he defeated David Dossetor from The Citadel in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. His next opponent will be Hampton's Seo-Jae Chang from Hampton. Change reached the quarterfinals of the South Carolina Fall Invitational earlier this season.

Cancado had a bye in the first round of action and tomorrow will face Karl Wishart from host North Carolina in the Round of 64. Wishart advanced by defeating William & Mary's Kavi Sud, 6-2, 6-1, in the opening Round of 128. The North Carolina freshman is 5-0 and captured a title at the UNC Groot Memorial Invitational. Cancado, meanwhile, is ranked #99 in the ITA Poll and holds a 4-3 record with appearances in the semifinals of the Hampton Roads Invitational of Virginia Beach, the quarterfinals of the University of Virginia Fall Classic, and the Round of 64 at the ITA All-American Championships qualifying bracket.

The ninth seeded duo of Cancado and Igarashi advanced as well on Thursday with two victories. The duo scored an opening Round of 64 victory over Nicolas Frayssinoux and Juan Carlo Vazquez of American, 8-6, and got through the Round of 32 with an 8-4 victory over Maryland's Louis Lavalle and Andy Orban. The Monarch doubles team will attempt to get past the tournament's top seeds in Georgia Tech's David North and Marko Rajevac.

The Yellow Jacket doubles team, ranked ninth in the ITA Poll, has posted a 5-2 record to date through the fall tournament season. North and Marko reached the quarterfinals of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships before being upset by the Duke Blue Devils' 40th-ranked doubles team. The Georgia Tech duo was also upset in the Round of 32 of the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships by the 29th ranked team by Auburn.
