NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Lady Monarch sophomore Linda Garder (Tallinn, Estonia) earned both singles and doubles titles of her brackets at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Newport News over the weekend at Huntington Park and Center Court Racket Club. Garder brought home the B-1 Doubles and C-2 Singles Titles.
In singles, Garder took home a 4-0 record which included a 7-5, 7-5 straight set win of Joy Adewumi in the finals. Garder's other wins included Maduri Jha of George Washington, Paign Fenn of Howard, and Rebecca Morse-Karzen of Mary Washington.
The doubles team of Garder and junior Larissa Santos (Florianopolis, Brazil) earned three wins, including two over BIG EAST opponents, en-route to the title. Following a 6-2 quarterfinal win over James Madison's Anna Khoor and Barrett Donner, the Lady Monarch duo played their way to the finals with an 8-4 victory over Katie Bramante and Wei Ming Long of Syracuse. In the final, Santos and Garder collected the title with an 8-5 win over Kristy Borza and Annie Davies of Pittsburgh.
Santos also saw singles action reaching the semifinals of the B-1 singles bracket. She earns wins over James Madison's Anna Khoor and George Washington's Tracy Stercko before bowing out to William & Mary's Lauren Cash, 6-2, 6-4.
Junior Barbara Kerner (Herxheim, Germany) went 1-1 on the weekend appearing the quarterfinals of the B-2 singles bracket. She played her way to a 6-1, 6-1 Round of 16 win over Cecelia Towne of Howard before dropping a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Lingda Yang of William & Mary.
The Lady Monarch tennis team returns to action next week at the ITA East Region Championships.
