NORFOLK, VA-- Freshman midfielder Trevor Banks (Madison, WI) scored the only goal of the match, and the 3rd ranked Old Dominion University Soccer Monarchs earned their sixth shutout in seven matches with a 1-0 victory over Northeastern. ODU upped their record to 9-1-2 (4-0-1), while Northeastern snapped their four game unbeaten streak and fell to 1-6-5 (0-1-4) on the year. Senior goalie John Connelly (Rockville, MD) earned three saves on the evening.
Banks scored his fifth goal of the season in the 44th minute of play after taking a feed from junior midfielder Ross Mackenzie (Midlothian, VA) and blasting it from 18 yards out to the upper left corner of the goal. Connelly made two difficult saves of quality Northeastern shots in the 88th minute of action to preserve the Monarch victory.
ODU outshot the Huskies 21-6, and held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. With the victory, the Monarchs extended their home regular season unbeaten streak to 30 matches, dating back to September 2002. Northeastern goalkeeper Sergio Saccoccio stopped 12 shots to help his team's cause.
The Monarchs return to action Sunday afternoon as they take on Hofstra in a rematch of last year's CAA championship match. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
