NORFOLK, Va. (January 16, 2005) -- The Old Dominion women's basketball team defeated Hofstra, 79-52, as the Lady Monarchs connected on a record high 35 free throws made in a game in a regulation contest that took two hours and 18 minutes to play.
Old Dominion, winners of two straight, upped its mark to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), while Hofstra fell to 7-7 and 2-3 in the league.
The game saw 80 free throws taken with the Lady Monarchs hitting 35-of-56 from the charity stripe. The 35 made by Old Dominion surpasses the previous school record of 34 recorded against former conference rival American back on February 13, 2000. Sophomore Jen Nuzzo (Newport News, Va), who ended the afternoon with a career-high 10 points, netted the record free throw. Hofstra, on the other hand, finished the afternoon going 16-of-24.
The Lady Monarchs made their move with 16:19 in the game. With the score tied at 7-7, Old Dominion proceeded to take a 9-0 run and never look back. The Pride cut it to three, 28-25, with 4:34 remaining until the intermission, but would go without a field goal the rest of the half. The Lady Monarchs rattled off 11 unanswered points for its largest lead of the half, a 14-point 39-25 advantage. Hofstra netted two free throws in the closing seconds to bring the score to 39-29 at the half.
Old Dominion outscored the Pride 40-25 in the second half. Both teams managed just seven field goals apiece, with the majority of the scoring come from the line in half number two. Of Old Dominion's 40 second half points, 26 were recorded from the stripe.
Four Lady Monarchs were in double figures led by 13 points from junior Lawona Davis (Port St. Lucie, Fla.). Grant added in 12, followed by sophomore Tiffany Green with 11 points. Green narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Nuzzo rounded out the double figure scorers for ODU.
Hofstra was led by Cigi McCollin's 18 points. Lana Harshaw came off the bench to net 11 in the loss. Charlotte Baldrey grabbed a team-high six boards for the Pride.
The Lady Monarchs return to action on Thursday, January 20th against William & Mary. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
