NORFOLK, VA--Ross Mackenzie (Midlothian, VA) scored in the 29th minute of the first half to give the #21 Old Dominion University Monarchs a 1-0 victory in front of 1,329 fans. The Monarchs improved to 2-0 on the season, and have now won five consecutive Stihl Soccer Classic matches dating back to September 2002. ODU also extended their regular season home winning streak to 25 matches. John Connelly (Rockville, MD) made three saves for the shutout. ODU will meet #13 Clemson on Sunday at 2:30.
In the 29th minute, Gregg Mottinger (Carrollton, TX) sent a cross from 35 yards out on the right side to a waiting Ross Mackenzie who one-timed the cross into the back of the net to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish. Mackenzie was active throughout the contest, firing off 7 shots. The goal was Mackenzie's first of the season, and the assist was Mottinger's first of the year as well. Connelly made a diving save of a Rhode Island penalty kick attempt by Lukasz Tumicz in the second half to preserve the Monarch's advantage. The Monarchs outshot the Rams 18-7 on the evening, and held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
In earlier Stihl Soccer Classic action, the #13 Clemson Tigers defeated William & Mary 3-2 in double overtime. Jeff Routh led the Tigers with two goals on the evening, coming in the 20th minute and 55th minute respectively. Alan O'Hara scored the game winner at 106:51 in the second overtime off a corner kick serviced by Nathan Sturgis to give Clemson the victory. Martin Brady and Andreas Nydal both notched a goal and assist for the Tribe. Clemson held a 17-0 advantage in corner kicks, and also outshot the Tribe 17-11. Phil Marfuggi collected five saves for Clemson, and Kris Rake made four for William & Mary.
The Stihl Soccer Classic resumes on Sunday at 12 noon, when the Tribe of William & Mary face Rhode Island, followed by the #21 Monarchs taking on #13 Clemson at 2:30 p.m. The Queens Cup presentation and announcing of awards will commence immediately following the conclusion of ODU-Clemson.
