CHAPEL HILL, NC--The 19th ranked Old Dominion University Soccer Monarchs suffered their first loss on the season Sunday in Chapel Hill, falling to #2 North Carolina 2-1. Senior Brian Cvilikas (Highland Ranch, CO) netted the lone goal for the Monarchs, as ODU fell to 3-1-1 on the season. North Carolina upped their record to 4-0-1 on the year. It was Cvilikas third goal in the past two games, and he moved into a tie for 15th all-time on ODU's career points scored list with 46.
North Carolina got on the board in the 38th minute when Brian Shriver tapped in a shot to the near post. He was assisted by Stephen Bickford and Dax McCarty on the play. The Tar Heels would strike again at the 58:16 mark when Corey Ashe took a cross sent by Ben Hunter and placed it into the back of the net to up their lead to 2. The Monarchs scored their only goal of the night in the 62nd minute when Cvilikas headed a corner kick serviced by Ross Mackenzie (Midlothian, VA) past the goalie.
Both teams took 15 shots for the game, with Cvilikas taking the most shots on the day (5). North Carolina held a 6-2 edge on corner kicks. John Connelly (Rockville, MD) earned 3 saves on the day.
The Monarchs return to action Wednesday night as they host the 4th ranked Virginia Cavaliers at the ODU Soccer Stadium. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
