NORFOLK, Va. -- Four top 10 teams, seven NCAA squads, and two WNIT participants from a year ago, the new expanded 12-team Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), and 13 homes dates highlight the 2005-06 Old Dominion women's basketball schedule announced by head coach Wendy Larry on Monday.
"We have had many outstanding schedules in the past 10 years," said Larry, "but this could contend for one of the best. Once again we will attempt to defend our Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) crown and our non-conference schedule will be the ultimate in preparation."
Following the annual Blue/White game on Sunday, October 30th and exhibition contests on November 7th and November 13th, the Lady Monarchs will officially kick-off the 2005-06 campaign on Homecoming hosting the Duke Blue Devils on Sunday, November 20th.
Old Dominion faces its first of 14 road challenges on Tuesday, November 22nd with annual intra-state rival Virginia Tech before returning home to host Penn State on Tuesday, November 29th and Vanderbilt on Sunday, December 4th.
December continues with a three-game road trip including Rutgers on Friday, December 9th, Charlotte on Sunday, December 18th, and Florida International on Wednesday, December 21st. Last season, the Lady Monarchs were only one of handful teams to knock off the Scarlet Knights, handing the then 16th-ranked Rutgers squad a 69-61 loss. Old Dominion will be returning games with the 49ers and Lady Panthers from two seasons ago. Florida International's co-head coaches are familiar with Lady Monarch fans as Cindy Russo and Inge Nissen patrol the sidelines, while Charlotte was one of 32 team invited to last year's post-season WNIT.
December closes with Old Dominion hosting ACC Champion North Carolina on the Thursday 29th, while January begins with the Lady Monarchs' final non-conference contest as they travel to Final Four participant Tennessee on Monday the 31st.
The CAA slate begins full swing on Friday January 6th at Virginia Commonwealth.
Home CAA games include Hofstra on Friday, January 13th, George Mason on Friday, January 20th, James Madison on Sunday, January 22nd, Preseason WNIT bound Drexel on Friday, February 3rd, new CAA member Northeastern on Sunday, February 5th, another CAA new addition in Georgia State on Sunday, February 12th, UNC-Wilmington on Friday, February 17th, Virginia Commonwealth on Friday, February 24th, and 2005 regular season home finale William & Mary on Sunday, February 26th.
Other road games in CAA action include William & Mary on Sunday, January 8th, Drexel on Sunday, January 15th, Hofstra on Friday, January 27th, Towson on January 29th, George Mason on Friday, February 10th, Georgia State on Sunday, February 12th, 2005 CAA runner-up Delaware on Sunday, February 19th, James Madison on Thursday, March 2nd and the 2005 regular season closer at CAA newcomer Georgia State on Saturday, March 4th.
The Lady Monarchs will set their sites on a record-breaking 15th straight league title as George Mason hosts the CAA Women's Basketball Tournament for the second straight season at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia. Tournament action will begin on Wednesday, March 8th, culminating in the championship game on Saturday, March 11th.
Old Dominion will also once again host the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament First and Second Rounds at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in March. While the Ted Constant Convocation Center has played host to the First and Second Rounds in 2003 and the Regional in 2004, this year's tournament will feature the new format with eight teams coming to the Tidewater area to vying for two spots in the "Sweet 16". The first round will take place on Sunday, March 19th and the second round will be played on Tuesday, March 21st.
The Lady Monarchs wrapped up the 2004-05 season with a 22-9 overall record and danced on to their 14th straight and 22nd overall NCAA Tournament. The 2005-06 version of the Old Dominion women's basketball team will return four starters and 10 letterwinners, including Second Team All-CAA and CAA All-Defensive Team honoree senior captain Lawona Davis (Port St. Lucie, Fla.).
