SCHOENDIENST AND JONES SELECTED IN BASEBALL DRAFT(College Baseball)

NORFOLK, VA--Junior shortstop Jesse Schoendienst (Belcamp, Md.)And lefthanded pitcher Needham Jones (Portsmouth, VA.) were selected in the2005 Major League Baseball draft Wednesday. Schoendiest in the 40th roundby St. Louis, Jones in the 36th round by the Chicago Cubs. They joine JamesBurok (Archbald, PA.) who was selected in the eighth round Tuesday byColorado.

Jones, a rising junior because he spent two years on a MormonMission in 2003 & 04 had the lowest earned run average on the team at 3.55.The 5-11 lefthander (Wilson HS) was 1-5 with 22 appearances, fanning 31batters in 38 innings.

The 5-11 Schoendienst hit .276 in 49 games with 48 starts for ODU. He hitTwo homers, with three doubles and one triple. He scored 23 times and stolefive bases in five attempts. Baseball Hall of Famer and former St. Louis Cardinalmanager Red Schoendienst is his Great Uncle.

One of ODU's recruits for the upcoming 2006 season, AnthonyShawler from Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, VA. was selectedin the 45th round by the Washington Nationals. The 6-2 Shawler compileda 2.36 ERA with 96 strikeouts. He pitched a five inning no-hitter andhit .418 with five home runs and 28 RBI's.
