HEMPSTEAD, NY-- David Cole singled home Pat Rogers with one out in the bottom of the tenth inning to give Hofstra (23-29/9-14) a 9-8 CAAvictory over Old Dominion (22-29/5-15) Saturday afternoon.
ODU trailed 8-5 after five innings, but Patrick Nichols slammed a two-runshot with Jesse Schoendienst aboard to cut the lead to one.
In the top of the eighth, Nichols hit his second homer of the game overthe leftcenterfield fence to tie the game at eight. Nichols now hasfive homeruns this season.
The Monarchs threaten to take the lead in the top of the ninthoff David Huth. BryanCipolla led off with a single and Tyler Belcher was hit with a pitch.Eric Mesa sacrificed them over to second and third with one out.Hofstra shortstop Josh Stern made a diving play on Stephen Harris'grounder and threw out Cipolla at the plate. Reliever Jeff Denlea then gotSchoendienst to fly out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the tenth Pat Rogers led off with a single andwas sacrificed to second. He then reached third on a wild pitch andcame home on David Cole's single to win the game.Cole finished the day with two hits and four runs batted in for Hofstra.Rogers scored three times and had three hits.
Nichols led ODU with three hits and three runs batted in. KeithHahn and Bryan Cipolla each had two hits on the day. Hahn knocked in two runs (Evan Chipman and Chris Keenan )in the second inning while Cipolla singled home Chipman in the first which now gives him a CAA leading 66 runs batted in.
Losing pitcher Needham Jones fanned five batters in four-plus innings ofrelief. The same two teams will play the third and final game ofthe series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
