PETERSBURG, VA-- Old Dominion and Virginia Commonwealth split a doubleheader Saturday at the Petersburg Sports Complex. The Monarchs(21-26/5-12) won game one behind the pitching of Kyle Dubois andJames Burok, then lost the nightcap to VCU (27-13/12-5) on a two-runwalk-off homer by Tim St.Clair.
In game one, Kyle Dubois pitched six-plus innings with five strikeoutsand James Burok pitched out of a jam in the seventh for his sixth saveof the year. Dubois is now 5-1 with a 3.41 earned run average. Burokcame in the seventh with runners on first and third with one out andgot the next two hitters to flyout.
Evan Chipman hit a solo homer in the top of the sixth to give ODUa 2-0 lead. Justin Gregula led off the seventh with a solo homer andJesse Schoendienst slammed a two-run shot in the eighth inning.Gregula, Schoendiest and Tyler Belcher each had two hits for ODU.
VCU was led by Sergio Miranda with three hits, while pinchhitter Thai Blackburn knocked in two runs.
In game two which was a scheduled for seven innings, the Monarchstied the game in the top of the seventh on a pinch hit solo homerby Matt Hudgins. ODU then took a 3-2 lead in the eighth on anRBI single by C.J. Jacinto.
In the bottom of the eighth, Scott Sizemore reached on a hit and advanced to second on a error. James Burok struck out the next two batters, butTim St. Clair slammed a homer over the rightcenter field fence towin the game.
The two teams will play the third and final game of the series Sundayat 2 p.m.
