NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (April 22, 2005) - The top four seeds in the 2005 CAA Women's Tennis Championship all moved on in quarterfinal action Friday at Huntington Park Tennis Center in Newport News, Va. The third-seeded Lady Monarchs advanced with a 4-1 win over sixth-seeded Delaware and will take on #2 Virginia Commonwealth in the semifinals.
Top-seeded William & Mary blanked #9 Towson 4-0, #2 Virginia Commonwealth downed #7 George Mason 4-0, #3 Old Dominion knocked off #6 Delaware 4-1 and #4 UNC Wilmington was a 4-0 winner over #5 James Madison. The winners advance to Saturday's semifinals at 10 a.m. where W&M will meet UNCW and VCU will take on ODU.
ODU defaulted at #3 doubles, but still earned the doubles point as #1 team of Kerstin Endlich/Fernanda Luiz pulled out a tough 8-6 win over UD's Susan Pollack/Alexa Dragonette and the #2 pair of Barbara Costa/Barbara Kerner beat Katie Miller/Brittany Barsky 8-4. The Blue Hens won the #6 flight by default, but the Lady Monarchs claimed the win with victories by #1 Endlich (6-2, 6-1), #2 Costa (6-2, 6-1) and #3 Fernanda Luiz (6-0, 6-0). ODU last won the CAA championship in 2001.
