TOWSON, MD-- Matt Hudgins (Virginia Beach, VA.) two-out doublescored Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.) in the top of the ninth and cappedoff a four-run rally as ODU defeated Towson, 6-5 in a CAA contest Fridayafternoon.
Towson took a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth when NCAA homerunleader Jason Maxey slammed a two-run homer, his 16th of the year. A.J.Tinnerella later singled home Pat Fields to make it 5-2. Towson leadsthe nation in homers with 62 in 31 games.
In the ninth, Steven Harris led off with a double and Justin Gregulagot a pinch hit single. Chris Keenan then walked to load the bases.Evan Chipman's sacrifice fly scored Harris and the other two runnersadvanced. Cipolla then singled home Gregula and Keenan to tie the game.Cipolla knocked in three runs on the day to give him a CAA leading52 runs batted in.
With two outs, Hudgins doubled to right, scoring Cipolla from secondwith the lead run.
In the bottom of the ninth James Burok came out and after walking thelead-off hitter, Shane Justis, he retired the next three batters, including two on strikeouts. Burok leads the CAA with five saves.
The other two Monarch runs came on a solo homer by Eric Mesa in thefifth and a sacrifice fly RBI by Cipolla in the sixth which scoredEvan Chipman. Chipman and Towson centerfielder Adam Heffron leadthe CAA with five triples. Both had one triple each today.
Needham Jones (Portsmouth, VA.) pitched two scoreless innings withtwo strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season.
The two teams play game two on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. BryanHansen is scheduled to start for ODU.
