NORFOLK, VA Brent Hitz pitched seven solid innings Sunday afternoon, surrendering one run and walking none, and the George Mason Patriots (15-6/6-1 CAA) completed a three game sweep of the ODU Monarchs (15-16/0-3 CAA), winning 3-1. For the Monarchs, Kyle Dubois (Virginia Beach/ Cox HS) pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out three.
The game was scoreless until the top of the 4th, when the Patriots scored three runs off of two RBI singles by Chris Looze and Robby Jacobsen and a sacrifice fly by Chris Fournier. Evan Chipman (Raleigh, NC) scored the Monarch's lone run on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Belcher (Bristol, VA) in the ODU half of the 4th to make it a 3-1 game.
The scoring would end after the 4th as both teams pitched their way out of minor jams in the final innings. ODU threatened in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth, butleft two runners on in each inning. The Monarchs left ten runners on base.
Jason Mills picked up his third save of the season, and second of the series. Kevin Gunter (Richland, NJ) struck out 5 in 5.1 innings of work but took the loss, as he fell to 2-4 on the year. Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge HS), Justin Gregula (Washington, PA), and Jesse Schoendienst (Belcamp, MD) contributed two hits apiece for the Monarchs.
The Monarchs finish off their March homestand Tuesday night as they host the visiting Longwood Lancers in a non-conference matchup. Game time is 7:00 pm at the Bud Metheny Complex.
