NORFOLK, VA -Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY) hit eight RBIs and tied a school record with six base hits as the Old Dominion baseball team defeated Princeton University 18-2 Friday afternoon at the Bud Metheney Baseball Complex. The 18 runs was a team high for the season. The Monarchs won their second straight game, improving to 14-10 for the season, while Princeton falls to 0-9.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
After two scoreless innings to start the game off, the Monarchs scored two in the third to take a 2-0 lead. ODU scored two more in the fourth, as Bryan Cipolla singled to right field, to take a 4-0 lead. The Monarchs added an additional six runs in the bottom of the fifth, led by Cipolla's double that brought in two runs, to take a 10-0 lead.
The Monarchs scored four runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to grab a 17-0 lead before Princeton broke through in the eighth with two runs to bring the score to 17-2. ODU added an additional run in the bottom of the eighth to take the 18-2 victory.
For the game, Bryan Cipolla was 6-for-6, with eight RBIs. Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, VA) got the win for the Monarchs, improving to 3-3 for the year. Arrowood pitched seven innings, striking out eight and allowing no runs on only four hits. Wills Sweney took the loss for Princeton, falling to 0-1 for the season.
The Monarchs are back in action Saturday at 1:00 for game two of the series.
