Final Stats

NORFOLK, VA -The Old Dominion baseball team used a season-high 21 hits to power towards a 16-4 victory over the University of Richmond Wednesday afternoon at the Bud Metheney Baseball Complex.  With the win, the Monarchs snapped a four-game skid and improve to 13-10 for the season.  Richmond falls to 6-9.

Richmond took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Monarchs answered with three runs to take a 3-1 lead after one.  Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY) hit a solo homerun to start off the scoring, and Tyler Belcher (Bristol, VA) and Justin Gregula (Washington, PA) added RBIs.  ODU scored another six runs in the second inning to take a 9-1 lead.  Gregula singled to left field to bring in two of the runs. 

 

Both teams traded a run in the fifth inning before the Monarchs scored four unanswered runs in the sixth to take a 14-2 lead.  Richmond and ODU both scored two runs in the seventh to bring the final score of 16-4.

 

Kevin Gunter (Richland, NJ) took the win for the Monarchs, improving to 2-2 on the year.  Gunter pitched 6.2 innings, allowing four runs and striking out three.  Stephen Owens took the loss for Richmond to drop to 0-2 for the season.

 

The Monarchs will be back in action this weekend, hosting a three game series against Princeton.  Game time Friday is at 3:00 and the games Saturday and Sunday are at 1:00.
