NORFOLK, VA -The Old Dominion baseball team dropped a pair of games Sunday during a double-header against Fordham University. The Monarchs lost 14-8 in the first game and 4-3 in the second, as Fordham completed the three-game sweep. ODU falls to 12-9, while Fordham improves to 7-5.
Both teams were tied at 5-5 going into the fourth inning during the first game, before ODU scored three in the bottom of the inning to grab a 8-5 lead. Patrick Nichols (Chesapeake, VA) singled to center field to bring in two of the runs. The Monarchs still led 8-6 going into the eighth inning, but Fordham scored six runs to take a 12-8 lead. Jordan Lert singled to center field, bringing in two runs and Drew Adler and Greg Smith both scored off wild pitches to lead the Rams. Fordham added two more runs in the top of the ninth to take the 14-8 victory.
Craig Tscherednikov (1-0) took the win for Fordham, pitching five innings, striking out three and allowing no runs. James Burok (Archbald, PA) took the loss for ODU, falling to 3-1 for the season. Burok allowed seven runs in two innings of work.
The Monarchs took a 3-1 lead in the second inning of the second game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second. Fordham scored a run in the top of the fifth to cut the ODU lead to 3-2. Going into the top of the ninth, the Monarchs still held a 3-2 lead, but the Rams scored two runs to pull out the 4-3 win.
Gary Kaible (1-0) got the win for Fordham, pitching one inning, allowing no runs. James Sammut picked up the save. Kevin Gunter (Richland, NJ) picked up the loss for ODU, falling to 1-2 for the season. Gunter allowed one run in one inning.
The Monarchs return to action Tuesday, when they host Liberty at 3:00.
