NORFOLK, VA.--Senior outfielder Evan Chipman (Raleigh, NC )singled home Brook Sinnen (Virginia Beach, VA.) with one out in the bottom of the sixteenth inning to lift the Monarchs of Old Dominion (8-5) to a 5-4 victory over the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (0-3) Sunday afternoon. The 16 innings is the longest game in ODU history.
The previous longest game by innings was 15 against Clemson on (3-8-89),VCU (3-17-89) and last year at The Citadel (2-22-04).
In the 16th Sinnen led off with a double and was sacrificed to third by JesseSchoendienst (Belcamp, MD.). Steve Harris (Virginia Beach, VA.) reached on an infield error, setting up Chipman's game winning hit to centerfield.
UMBC scored two in the fourth on a double by Joe Fowler and a fielder's choice RBI by Carl Wolf. In the fifthAlex Laddbush scored on an error and in the ninthSteve Russo singled home pinch runner Mike Schaeffel to tied the game at four.
ODU's first run came on C.J. Jacinto's (Virginia Beach, VA.) single which plated Tyler Belcher (Bristol, VA.). In the Sixth inning, Steve Harris'groundout scored Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, VA.) who led the inning off with A triple. Belcher doubled home Evan Chipman and Justin Gregula (Washington, PA.) would later single Home Belcher to give ODU a 4-3 lead.
James Burok (3-0) picked up the win in relief, his second this week. Burok pitched nine innings, fanned a career high ten batters and walked no one. Evan Chipman led ODU with three hits, while C.J. Jacinto and Tyler Belcher each had two hits. AlexLaddbush had three hits on the day for UMBC.
The Monarchs host crosstown rival Norfolk State on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
