Monarchs Use 11-Run Fourth Inning to Cruise Past UMBC 17-4

NORFOLK, VA  -The Old Dominion baseball team used an 11-run 4th inning to cruise past UMBC 17-4 Saturday afternoon at the Bud Metheney Baseball Complex.  The Monarchs improve to 7-5 for the season, while UMBC falls to 0-2.

ODU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, as C.J. Jacinto (Virginia Beach, VA) and Evan Chipman (Raleigh, NC) both singled to centerfield.  UMBC responded in the top of the second by scoring three runs to grab a 3-2 lead, but in the bottom of the fourth, the Monarchs unleashed for 11 runs to take the 13-3 lead.  During the inning, ODU went through the lineup nearly two times, as Patrick Nichols (Chesapeake, VA) doubled to right field, Eric Mesa (Miami, FL) doubled to left field and Steven Harris (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam) hit a triple to left field to help lead the charge.

 

UMBC got on the board in the top of the 7th, as Mike Scheffel singled to left field, allowing Mark Lemon to score, cutting the lead to 13-4.  In the bottom of the eighth, however, the Monarchs opened up again, scoring four runs, with Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY) hit a three-run home run.

 

Kevin Gunter (Richland, NJ) took the win for the Monarchs, pitching seven innings, and throwing four strikeouts.  Eric Butkiewicz took the loss for UMBC.

 

Game three of the series will be played Sunday at 1:00 at the Bud Metheney Baseball Complex.
