NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's basketball clamped down on the CAA's leading scoring, allowing Meagan Samis just four points, as the Lady Monarchs defeated UNC-Wilmington, 76-52, Thursday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. The Lady Monarchs had four in double figures led by junior Lawona Davis (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) with 16 points. Davis also added in three assists, three steals, and six rebounds.
The win improved Old Dominion to 17-7 overall and 13-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. They still remain a half-game behind Delaware in the standings. UNC-Wilmington fell to 7-18 overall and 4-12 in the CAA.
Lindsay Isom was the only Seahawk in double figures with 11. Samis, who entered the game with a league leading 17.0 points per game was held to just one field goal netted with 5:29 in the first half and two free throws late in half number two. The redshirt freshman finished the night 1-of-7 from the field with a team-high four rebounds and three assists.
Rookie forward Tiffany Green (Chesapeake, Va.) narrowly missed her eighth double-double of the year netting 12 points and nine boards. Senior Shareese Grant (Va. Beach, Va.) had 14 points to go along with six assists, while junior Sherida Triggs (Norcross, Ga.) scored 10, including the games' first eight points.
Old Dominion swatted away a season-high 11 blocks, with Green, Triggs, and freshman forward Megan Pym (Newfield, N.Y.) all rejecting three Seahawk shots.
Additionally, the Lady Monarch committed a season-low 10 turnovers.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the opening minutes of play, the Lady Monarchs took off on a 12-2 run and never looked back. After extending its lead to 12 with 8:17 left in the first half, UNC-Wilmington took a 7-1 run to close within six, 24-18. The run was capped by Samis' first bucket of the night, however, it would the closest the Seahawks would come to the Old Dominion the rest of the night. From there, Old Dominion rattled off nine unanswered points to go up by 15 and maintain a double digit lead for the rest of the game. The Seahawks would only manage two field goals, both by leading scorer Isom as the Lady Monarchs held a 35-22 edge at the half.
Old Dominion expanded its lead by as many as 30 in the second half.
The Lady Monarchs will close out its home portion of the 2004-05 schedule on Sunday when they host James Madison. The game against the Dukes will televised on Comcast SportsNet as well as MSG on a tape delay basis.
Additionally the game will be the "Hoops For A Cure" game with a Women's Health Expo beginning at 2:00 p.m. and a Breast Cancer Survivor Reception at 2:00 p.m. as well.
Old Dominion will also welcome back the 1980 and 1985 National Championship Teams. The general public is invited to renew old friendships with the members of the teams prior to the game at an open house hosted by the ODU alumni association from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the new Barry Kornblau Alumni Center on the corner of Hampton Blvd. and 49th Street.
Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
