CHARLESTON, SC--Senior outfielder Evan Chipman (Raleigh, NC.) hit a solo homerun To lead off the bottom of the fifth inning which lifted the Monarchs of Old Dominion to a 5-4 victory over Coppin State in the final day of the Homewood Suites Shootout at Riley Park. ODU is now 5-3 overall and have won two straight one-run games.
With Coppin leading, 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, ODU eruptedfor four runs to take the lead. Patrick Nichols (Chesapeake, VA.) led off with a double, and with one out Evan Chipman walked. Keith Hahn (Valley Stream, NY.) then singled home Nichols for the first run.
Steve Harris (Virginia Beach, VA.) then doubled home both Hahn and Chipman to make it 3-2. With two outs, Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.) walked and Tyler Belcher (Bristol, VA.) then doubled to leftfield scoring Cipolla to give the Monarchs a 4-2 lead.
The Eagles rallied to tie the game in the top of the fifth with two runs. With theBases loaded, Nick Wenger walked and forced home a run, then Amiel Traynum scoredfrom third on a passed ball.
Junior righthander Kyle Dubois won his first game as a Monarch, pitchingfour innings in relief with five strikeouts, one walk and two hits. He fanned the sidein the fifth inning with two runners on to get out of trouble. James Burok (Archbald, PA.) came on in the ninth as he did yesterday against Richmond and shut the door for hissecond save of the season. Patrick Nichols led ODU with two hits on the day and Chipman scored twice.
The Monarchs return to action on Tuesday when they host George Washingtonat 3 p.m. in the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
