WILLIAMSBURG, VA - Junior Lawona Davis' (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) second career double-double helped propel the Old Dominion women's basketball team to a 68-50 victory over the Tribe of William & Mary. Davis netted a team-high 17 points and hauled in 10 rebounds as one of two Lady Monarchs in double figures. Sophomore Shantel Wilson (Washington, D.C.) was the other with a career-high 10 points.
Old Dominion collected its 38th straight win over William & Mary, a team that has not defeated the Lady Monarchs since an 89-53 win at Norfolk during the 1975-76 season. The Lady Monarchs improve to 16-7 on the season (12-2 CAA), one half game back of Delaware. The Fightin' Blue Hens suffered a loss to Towson on Sunday afternoon to see their record fall to 13-2 in league play. Another Delaware loss will could put Old Dominion a top the CAA standings if they finish their remaining schedule out with victories. If both teams remain win out the rest of their schedule, the two teams will grab a share of the regular season title with the Fightin' Blue Hens gaining the top spot at tournament time with the tie break.
The Tribe suffers their tenth straight loss, falling to 4-20 on the year (2-13 CAA).
The Lady Monarch defense held the Tribe to just 15 field goals total as William & Mary shot just 24.2% from the floor, but sophomore guard Kyle DeHaven was able to net a game-high 18 points. DeHaven was joined in double figures by freshmen Devin James and Jalen Boone, who contributed 11 and 10 points respectively.
Davis, who poured in first career double-double in February 6th's win over Towson at the Constant Center arrived at the game just 45 minutes before tipoff. She posted a season-high four steals and dished three assists.
William and Mary got as close as 11-10 in the early part of the first half. However, ODU began a 12-0 run to open its lead to 23-10. The Lady Monarchs held a 38-20 lead at the half. In the first half, Old Dominion outshot the Tribe 48.5% (16-33) to 18.4% (7-38).
The second half would prove to be more of the same, as the Lady Monarchs protected their lead and expanded it to 23 on three separate occasions.
Old Dominion, ranked third in the nation in rebounding margin in last week's NCAA statistics, outrebounded the Tribe 49-38.
The Lady Monarchs close out the home portion of its schedule this coming week hosting UNC-Wilmington on Thurdsay night and James Madison on Sunday afternoon.
