CHARLESTON,SC--Tyler Belcher's two-out single in the top of the eighth inning plated pinch runner Brooks Sinnen (Va.Beach, VA.) and lifted the Monarchs to a 5-4 victory over Richmond in the second round of the Homewood Suites Shootout at Riley Park.
ODU broke open a pitchers duel between the Monarchs junior lefthander Bryan Hansen (Vass, NC.) and Richmond's Ja Jones in the sixth with two runs. Steve Harris' groundout scored Jesse Schoendienst (Belcamp,MD.) from third, and Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.) singled home Evan Chipman (Raleigh, NC.).
In the seventh, ODU scored two more runs as Tyler Belcher(Bristol,VA.) singled in Justin Gregula (Washington, PA.) and Belcher would later score on a Chipman groundout. Richmond rallied with four runs in the bottom of the seventh highlighted by a two-run single by Ben Zeskind.
In the eighth inning with two outs Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, VA.) singled and Sinnen came in to run for him. Justin Gregula reached on an error and Sinnen advanced to third. Belcher then singled up the middle to give the Monarchs the lead for good.
Senior righthander James Burok (Archbald, PA.) came on in the ninth and put the Spiders down In order with two strikeouts. Hunter Hall (Va.Beach, VA.) got the win. ODU will play Coppin State in the third and final game of the Classic Sunday at 11 am.
