CHARLESTON, SC--Chris Altman drove home Chris Ard for the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning as The Citadel (2-1) defeated Old Dominion, 6-5 Friday in The Homewood Suites Shootout at Riley Park. ODU took a 5-4 lead in the top of the frame. The Monarchs will meet Richmond Saturday in round two at 11 am.
ODU (3-3) opened the scoring in the first inning as Matt Hudgins (Va.Beach, VA.) singled home Steve Harris (Va. Beach, VA.). In the fourth, trailing 3-1, Hudgins doubled and scored on Justin Gregula's (Washington, PA.) single to make it 3-2.
The Monarchs tied the game at four in the seventh as Tyler Belcher (Bristol, VA.) led off with a double and Eric Mesa (Miami, FL.) followed with single. After Jesse Schoendienst (Belcamp, MD. ) bunted Mesa to second, Evan Chipman (Raleigh, NC.) doubled Belcher and Mesa home.
In the top of the 11th, Mesa was hit with a pitch by Stephen Williams. He thenscored on Schoendienst double to left center.
The Bulldogs came right back in the 11th as Matt Covington led off with a double.Chris Ard was the hit with a pitch. With one out Chris Swauger was intentionally walked.Covington scored on a fielders choice groundout by Tripp Capplemann, and Chris Altman followed with a hit to win the game.
Five Monarchs, Evan Chipman, Matt Hudgins, Justin Gregula, Tyler Belcher and Eric Mesa each had two hits on the day. Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge, VA.) fanned five in five innings of relief for ODU.
