NORFOLK, Va. -- Former Lady Monarch field hockey standouts, Angie Loy (Loysville, Pa.), Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, Pa.), and Tiffany Snow (Escondido, Calif.) were among the announced selections for the 2005 USA Field Hockey women's national squad.
Snow was the sixth Old Dominion field hockey player to be named a Honda Award winner as the nation's top field hockey player after guiding the Lady Monarchs to a 21-4 record and to the NCAA semi-finals in 2002. During her senior campaign she was tied for second in the nation in points (75), second in the nation in goals scored with 30 and 11th nationally in assists with 15. Defensively she led ODU to six shutouts and a team best three defensive saves. Snow finished her career ranked sixth on the Old Dominion all-time goals list with 71 and 182 total points. Snow's list of honors and awards bestowed upon her include two First Team Dita/NFHCA All-America selection, CAA Player of the Year, CAA Tournament MVP, and the prestigious Tom Scott Award.
Loy, a standout midfielder for the Lady Monarchs throughout her career, was the 2003 CAA Player of the Year and CAA Tournament MVP. She completed her senior season leading the Lady Monarchs with 24 goals, 21 assists for a total of 69 points on the year. Loy finished her stellar career ranked fourth in career goals (77), ninth in career assists (56), and fourth all-time in scoring with 210 career points. Also among her career highlights were being named 2000 CAA Rookie of the Year, two First Team All-America honors, three All-CAA selections, four NFHCA Academic All-American honors, and two First Team All-South recognitions.
Leonetti, a fiery and vocal mainstay of the Lady Monarch defense a few seasons ago was the CAA Defender of the Year in 2003 and a two-time All-America pick. She ended her senior season with three goals, a team-second best 12 assists, and 18 total points. Defensively, Leonetti helped her Lady Monarch teams to shutouts over conference rivals William & Mary, Delaware, James Madison, Hofstra, and Towson. For her career, Leonetti amassed 14 goals, 38 assists, and 66 points. She was a two-time First Team All-CAA selection and a two-time First Team All-South Region pick.
The national squad will begin training for the 2005 Rabobank Champions Challenge to be held July 8-16 in Virginia Beach. The tournament features six of the world's top-rated teams including England, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain and the host USA.
National squad athletes will either relocate and train as part of the U.S. residency squad in Virginia Beach or take part in regionalized training at locations near their residence through USA Field Hockey's new Elite Performance Training Center program.
