NORFOLK, VA -The #9 Old Dominion men's soccer team won the 29th Annual Stihl Soccer Classic, after defeating Rutgers 1-0 Sunday afternoon at the ODU Soccer Stadium.  Kevon Harris (Kingston, Jamaica) was named the Tournament MVP.  The Monarchs improve to 4-0 for the season and extend their home unbeaten streak to 20 games.  William & Mary, the runners-up at this year's tournament, defeated Navy 1-0 earlier in the day.

Brian Cvilikas (Highlands Ranch, CO) scored the lone goal for the Monarchs, scoring at the 28:35 mark in the first half, off an Edson Elcock (Brooklyn, NY) assist, as ODU picked up the 1-0 win over the Scarlet Knight.  For the game, goalkeeper John Connelly (Rockville, MD) picked up his third shutout of the season, saving three shots.  ODU held the 10-7 shots advantage, while Rutgers had the 6-3 corner kicks advantage. 

 

In the earlier game, William & Mary's Brendan McCurdy scored late in the first half, off a Bryan Hinkle assist, to lead the Tribe to a 1-0 victory over the U.S. Naval Academy.  Goalkeeper Kris Rake picked up the shutout for William & Mary, saving one shot.  For the game, the Tribe had a 13-1 shots advantage, while both teams had two corner kicks.

 

Kevon Harris was named the Tournament MVP, after being a part of three goals Friday night against Navy.  Harris was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week this past week.

 

The Monarchs will travel to Baltimore, MD next Saturday, when they meet Maryland-Baltimore County at 1:00.  ODU returns home Tuesday, September 21, when they host #3 North Carolina at 7:00.
