NORFOLK, VA -The #9 Old Dominion men's soccer team defeated Navy 5-1 Friday night, in the first day of the Stihl Soccer Classic, at the ODU Soccer Stadium.  Five different Monarchs found the net during the game.  In the earlier game, Rutgers rallied to tie William & Mary 1-1.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

Kevin McMenamin (West Springfield, MA) got the Monarchs on the board first, scoring at the 26:03 mark of the game, off a Kevon Harris (Kingston, Jamaica) assist, in front of the net.  Harris scored the next goal for ODU, at the 34:47 mark, to give ODU the 2-0 lead.  Freshman defender David Horst (Pine Grove, PA) scored next for the Monarchs, off a Kevon Harris assist.  Horst was able to get to the ball after Harris kicked the corner kick.

 

Early in the second half, Ross Mackenzie (Richmond, VA) extended the Monarch lead to 4-0 and Brian Cvilikas (Highlands Ranch, CO) found the next at the 66:08 mark, scoring his first goal of the year, to give ODU the 5-0 lead.  Navy scored with jut over 10 minutes remaining, when Carter Stapleton assisted Jason Copare for the score.

 

John Connelly (Rockville, MD) has still not allowed a goal, playing 67 minutes Friday night.  For the game, ODU held an 18-7 shots advantage, while Navy had the 3-2 corner kicks edge.

 

In earlier action, William & Mary's Brannon Thomas put the Tribe on the board, at the 83:17 mark of the game, to give them a 1-0 lead.  With just 1:20 left in regulation, Bart Koffeman scored a goal for Rutgers, assisted by Wes Kirk.  The game ended in a 1-1 tie.  Rutgers had the 16-8 shots advantage for the game, as well as a 6-5 corner kicks advantage.  William & Mary goalkeeper Kris Rake made six saves and allowed one goal in 110 minutes of action.  Rutger's Lubos Ancin made two saves for the game.

 

The Stihl Soccer Classic continues on Sunday, when William & Mary meets Navy at 12:00 noon, followed by ODU and Rutgers at 2:30.  Awards and presentations will be made following the game.
