Lady Monarchs Down The Netherlands, 88-60, In Exhibition Action

NORFOLK, Va. -- Senior guard Shareese Grant (Va. Beach, Va.) led three Lady Monarchs in double figures with 19 points, six rebounds, and five assists as the women's basketball team earned an 88-60 victory over the national team from the Netherlands on Wednesday night at the Ted Constant Convocation.

Junior Lawona Davis (Port St. Lucie, Fl.) poured in 13 points, while reserve T.J Jordan (Portsmouth, Va.) added in 11. Sophomore Corrina Turner (Miami, Fl.) nearly missed a double-double hauling in a game-high 13 boards and eight points.

The Netherlands was led by former George Mason star and three-point threat Laura Kooij. Kooij scored 12 of her game-high 20 points from behind the arc.

With the Lady Monarchs up by one early, 7-6, they went on an 11-1 run to break the game open. The Dutch National Team got as close as eight points moments later, 22-14, with 11:02 on the clock, but another run by the Lady Monarch, this time 12-0, gave Old Dominion a 20-point lead, 34-14 with 6:38 remaining until the half. During the run, rookie Shahida Williams (Newark, N.J.) put up six of her eight points from off the bench. The Lady Monarchs ended the half ahead, 44-28.

Old Dominion continued to add to its lead in the second half, coming back from the locker room on a 16-4 tear. After Kooij hit two free throws to cut the Netherlands deficit to 18, 48-30 with 18:21, junior Paula Muxiri (Luanda, Angola) hit a lay-up as the Lady Monarchs never trailed by less than 20 points for the rest of the night. Grant's final points of the night, with 1:30 remaining, gave Old Dominion its largest lead of the game, a 31-point 85-54 edge.

The Lady Monarchs outrebounded its opponent, 53-34, and shot 46.5 percent from the field.

The Old Dominion women's basketball team returns to action in its final exhibition game on Sunday, November 14th against Team Concept at 2:00 p.m. The Lady Monarchs open the 2004-05 regular season at Georgia Tech on November 23rd.
