NORFOLK, Va. -- Junior Paula Muxiri (Luanda, Angola) will miss the 2004-05 season after suffering an ACL tear in practice last week. Old Dominion head coach Wendy Larry said the 6-1 forward will undergo surgery in December following Muxiri's final exams.
Muxiri, who averaged 3.7 points and 2.6 rebounds, was one of the top Lady Monarchs off the bench last season. In helping Old Dominion to its NCAA record 13th straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title and its 21st NCAA appearance, Muxiri appeared in 25 games and netted a career-high 10 points against George Mason on February 29th. She averaged 14.2 minutes per game and shot .480 from the field.
Since joining the Lady Monarchs in 2002, Muxiri has averaged 2.9 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.
The Lady Monarchs, who are receiving votes for the second straight week in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today/WBCA Coaches' Poll and play the fourth strongest non-conference schedule according the WBCA/Summerville RPI report, open the 2004-05 campaign on Tuesday when they travel to Atlanta, Georgia to take on the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech. Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m.
