WILMINGTON, NC -The Old Dominion women's soccer team qualified for their first CAA Tournament since 2001 by defeating UNC-Wilmington 2-1 Saturday afternoon at the UNC-Wilmington Soccer Stadium. Sophomore Forward Meredith Worsley (Durham, NC) and Junior Forward Laura Beeman (Chalfont, PA) each scored goals in a two-minute span midway through the second half to lead the Lady Monarchs to victory. ODU improves to 9-7-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, as they snap a two-game losing streak. UNC-Wilmington falls to 10-7-1 overall and 1-7-1 in the CAA.
UNC-Wilmington's Ashley Church scored her third goal of the season in the 63rd minute of the game, off an assist by Phoebe Mroczek, to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead. The Lady Monarchs struck back nearly two minutes later, when Meredith Worsley headed the ball into the net off a corner kick. Lisa McKenzie (Inverness, Scotland) and Laura Beeman assisted in the goal. Laura Beeman scored just over two minutes later--in the 66th minute of the game--off an assist by Lisa McKenzie--to give ODU the 2-1 lead.
For the game, ODU out-shot the Seahawks 11-5 and had a 6-4 corner kicks edge. Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Miller (Plymouth Meeting, PA) made three saves and allowed one goal during the game.
The Lady Monarchs, with the victory, qualified for the six-team CAA Tournament. First round action begins Tuesday, November 6. ODU's opponent has yet to be determined.
