NORFOLK, Va. -- The Lady Monarchs took to the court in their first exhibition of the 2004-05 season in the annual Blue-White intra-squad scrimmage. Sophomore forward Tish Lyon (Newport News, Va.) finished the afternoon with a team-leading 12 points and 10 rebounds as she poured in six points apiece for both the Blue and White squads. The Blue squad edged out the White, 50-42.
Senior guard Shareese Grant (Va. Beach, Va.) and junior forward Paula Muxiri (Luanda, Angola) paced the White team with 11 and 10 points respectively. Grant shot just 4-of-11 from the floor, but was 3-of-4 from the line along with three boards, five assists, and four steals in playing all 32 minutes of the scrimmage. Muxiri was one of four Lady Monarchs to go perfect from the charity stripe hitting all four of her shots. The junior forward also collected four rebounds.
Newcomer Shahida Williams (Newark, N.J.) tallied nine points, including an eight-point effort as a member of the Blue team in the first half. Williams played all 16 minutes of the first half going 4-of-6 from the floor and grabbing four rebounds.
Sophomore Corrina Turner (Miami, Fla.) made a successful return to the court. Turner, a senior academically but a sophomore eligibility wise, played 23 minutes with six points and six rebounds to lead the White team on the boards.
Other Lady Monarchs making debuts on Saturday afternoon included junior transfer from Kansas, Tamara Ransburg (Kansas City, Mo.). Playing for both squads, Ransburg combined for eight points and nine rebounds. Freshman T.J. Jordan (Portsmouth, Va.) had five points and two assists for the Blue team, while fellow classmate Tiffany Green (Chesapeake, Va.) had six points and two rebounds in her debut also playing with both squads. Lyons' former teammate from Woodside High School in Newport News, Va., Jen Nuzzo, had two points and four assists total. Megan Pym (Newfield, N.Y.) came off the bench for the Blue squad and ended the afternoon with two points, two steals, and a team-leading two blocks.
Junior Lawona Davis (Port St. Lucie, Fla.), one of two starters returning from last season's 25-7 CAA Championship team, netted eight points, sophomore center Angela Brown (Albany, Ky.) had three points and five rebounds, and sophomore Sherida Triggs (Norcross, Ga.) recorded eight points and four rebounds.Walk-on Melea Calwell (Hendersonville, N.C.) also played dishing out four assists for the Blue squad in their victory.
The Lady Monarchs return to action on Wednesday, November 3rd against the Basketball Travelers in exhibition play. Game-time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
