NORFOLK, VA -The Old Dominion women's soccer team survived a shootout against George Mason Sunday afternoon, taking a 4-3 victory at the ODU Soccer Stadium. Lisa McKenzie (Inverness, Scotland) scored two goals for the Lady Monarchs, as ODU improves to 5-4-2 and 2-1-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play. George Mason falls to 5-6-2 and 0-2 in the CAA.
George Mason struck in the 4th minute of the game, when Allison Cowan scored off a Danielle MacDonald corner kick, to take an early 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, ODU answered back, when Danielle Heusser (Hummelstown, PA) scored off a Becca McLain (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) corner kick, to tie the game at 1-1. Nearly 10 minutes later, in the 18th minute, Bea Gugliotti (Avon, CT) scored an unassisted goal to put ODU up 2-1.
Freshman Lisa McKenzie scored the next two goals for ODU, in the 27th and 36th minutes off assists by Bea Gugliotti and Danielle Heusser, respectively. The Lady Monarchs took a 4-1 lead into halftime.
George Mason got back into the game in the second half, scoring two unanswered goals. Allison Cowan scored her second goal of the game at the 47:47 mark, off a Sarah Wilkinson assist. Things were reversed in the 61st minute, when Wilkinson scored off a Cowan assist, to cut the ODU lead to 4-3, which became the final score.
For the game, George Mason out-shot ODU 10-6, while both teams had four corner kicks.
ODU will be on the road next week, taking on William & Mary Thursday night, October 7, at 7:00.
