CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -The #18 Old Dominion men's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision at #2 Virginia Wednesday night at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville. The Monarchs drop to 10-4-2 overall for the season, while Virginia improves to 14-2-0, with a 11-0 record at home. Ross Mackenzie (Richmond, VA) scored the lone Monarch goal, off a Penalty Kick in the 79th minute of play, to lead ODU.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
Virginia got things started early, when Adam Cristman scored in the ninth minute, on a header, with assists by Ian Holder and Hunter Freeman. In the 34th minute, the Cavaliers extended their lead when Jeremy Barlow chipped the ball in the box off a corner kick, with assists from Jeff Tuman and Hunter Freeman. Five minutes later, Matt Oliver gave Virginia the 3-0 lead, when he chipped the ball in the box off a free kick, assisted by Hunter Freeman.
Ross Mackenzie got the Monarchs on the scoreboard in the 79th minute, when he connected on a Penalty Kick, to cut the deficit to 3-1. The Cavaliers, however, connected on a Penalty Kick of their own in the 86th minute to take the 4-1 victory.
For the game, Virginia out-shot the Monarchs 12-10 and had a 7-5 advantage on corner kicks.
The Monarchs next host William & Mary on Saturday, November 6, in their regular season finale. Game time is at 7:00.
