NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion University head baseball coachJerry Meyers announced today the hiring of Ryan Morris as his first assistantCoach. Morris, a native of Portsmouth, VA. has spent the last five years asan assistant at Virginia Commonwealth University. He also served as anassistant at ODU in 1999.
"Ryan has a strong background in both recruiting and working withthe players on the field, "said Meyers. "He has great energy and we are excited tohave him join the Monarch baseball family."
While at VCU, Morris recruited, and served as the team's infieldand defensive coach. The Rams defense ranked among the national leadersin each of the past four seasons. The 1999 Monarchs were 38-17, reached the CAA Finals against East Carolina, and defeated nationally ranked South Carolina, Rutgers and N.C. State.
Morris served as head coach of the Waynesboro Generals in the Shenandoah Valley Baseball League, and Peninsula in the Coastal Plains League.
A three-year starter at second base for Bridgewater, Morris helped theEagles to three consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament championships from 1994-96 and two appearances in the NCAA Division IIITournament. Morris also earned All-ODAC tournament honors during hissenior campaign. That year, Bridgewater, coached by Curt Kendall was16-0 in the conference and 27-8 overall. Morris teamed with fellow infielderAllen Snow to set the school double play record. Morris hit .300 for his careerand is second all-time with 69 career walks at Bridgewater.
Morris was a second team All-Southeastern District second basemanat Manor High School. In 1992, he helped the Mustangs to the districttitle and a berth in the regional tournament.
He graduated from Bridgewater in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in Health and physical education. Morris and his wife, Amy, have been married since August, 2000.
