WILMINGTON, NC-- Three UNC Wilmington Seahawk pitchers held Old Dominion to two hits in an8-1 CAA victory Saturday afternoon. It was the regular season finale for both teams. Sophomore outfielder Steven Harris got both hits for ODU and knocked in the Monarchs lone run.
ODU is now 26-26 overall and 13-11 in the CAA, while UNCW is 33-20 overall and17-6 in the CAA. If William and Mary beats Towson Sunday, then the Tribe will bethe number four seed and ODU will be seeded fifth. If Towson wins, the Monarchswill remain in fourth. The six-team CAA tournament begins in Wilmington Wednesday.
ODU scored first as Brandon Carter reached on a two-out error. He thenscored on Steven Harris' first inning double. Harris also singled in the fourth inning.
Monarch starter Jason Godin, who fanned the side in the first inning held UNCWscoreless until the fifth when Lee McLeantripled home Chip Grawey, then he scored on Matt Sutton's single. Sutton wouldlater score on Aaron Smith's single to make it 3-1 after five.
Aaron Smith led UNCW's 15-hit attack with three hits in five at-bats,while Chip Grawey, Lee McLean,and Tim Preston each had two hits on the day.
Zach Booker, Jeff Moore and Blake Cross allowed only one run, two hits, oneand one walk on the day.
Stephen Harris leads ODu with a .350 batting average and has a team leading 38runs batted in. Allen Strick leads ODU with six homers, while Harris andDerek James have five homers each. Brandon Carter leads the team with 12 steals,and 36 runs scored. Donnie Smith has a 2.03 ERA with 97 strikeouts in 80 innings.Smith is 6-2 on the year and has a 1.89 ERA in CAA contests.
Justin Verlander is 7-5 with a 3.19 ERA. Verlander has 145 strikeouts in just 98innings. Teams are hitting .223 against him and .198 against Smith.
